The Theatre of Mistakes Artists’ group The Theatre of Mistakes (1974-81) pioneered a structured performance art traversing architecture, choreography and poetry as well as visual art. They formed in London in the early 1970s from a series of open workshops at which instructional and games-based exercises were the focus. These came to inform The Street (1975), a performance with the residents and environment of Ascham Street in Kentish Town. Fiona Templeton and Anthony Howell distilled the performance exercises into a publication, Elements of Performance Art (1976), arguably the first manifesto for performance art in the UK. A core group of six performers (Mickey Greenall, Glenys Johnson, Miranda Payne, Peter Stickland as well as Howell and Templeton) then agreed to produce contained and systematic works for a five-year duration. The Theatre of Mistakes was a subject of a 2017 retrospective entitled "In Case There's a Reason: The Theatre of Mistakes" which ran from June 30 to August 6, 2017 at Raven Row in London. Recognition (1996) Recognition was a solo performance with a text by Fiona Templeton and developed in collaboration with the late Michael Ratomski, who also appeared on videotape. Michael originally also performed in the work; he died before it was finished. Once he was unable to participate physically, he continued to advise, and the piece became a solo, interacting with him on videotape shot on stage, at home, and in the hospital. Recognition began as a play about the fictions we invent to deal with "reality." Its characters are named after its performers. Crucial to the dialogue is the fact that Michael had AIDS; the word is not used, but the work confronts mortality, and whether anyone can represent the experience of another. The play is set in a court, as characters give witness to different personae, places, and interpretations. The video monitor with the footage of Michael functions as a character in the space, "sitting" and being moved in a chair. The "play" and place gradually disintegrate to leave the real absence, and the audience is made complicit in the struggle to create meaning in the face of mortality. Video camerawork was by Darryl Turner and Roy Faudree. Recognition premiered at The Kitchen, New York, and at the ICA, London in 1996. It was seen at the Cambridge Conference on Contemporary Poetry, Leeds Conference on Women and Text, and Norwich Gallery. Over six weeks, the author wrote on a continuous paper that wove in an out of all the cells of one block, installing and writing one cell onsite each day. Each cell is dedicated to a different prisoner of conscience somewhere in the world, and with the old prison furniture the cell is made into a place where the visitor found a text and photograph on that case, and facilities to write in petition on their behalf. The installation was published in book form with accompanying photos and descriptive material by Roof Books in 1997.
